The Cones Had Not Yet Arrived
A Zoox robotaxi drove into heavy smoke at an active fire scene. It could recognise an emergency scene. It could not recognise smoke.
On 20 June 2026 an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi approached an active fire scene in the Las Vegas Valley. Zoox is the autonomous-vehicle company Amazon acquired in 2020.
Emergency responders were present and working. The scene had not yet been secured. The traffic cones that would eventually close two of the three travel lanes had not yet been placed. Between the vehicle and the incident there was heavy smoke lying across the roadway.
The vehicle drove into it.
What it did next is the least interesting part of the record. It braked hard, steered away and stopped. This is broadly what one would wish for, arriving somewhat later than one would wish for it.
It then required a Zoox teleoperator — a human being at a distance, watching — to reverse it back out of the smoke. The responders were then able to place their cones. Nobody was hurt. No passenger was aboard. The fire continued throughout.
The instructive part is the phrasing of the remedy. Zoox’s filing describes a software update that “enhances the existing capability of detecting active [emergency] scenes by adding the ability to detect and respond to heavy smoke in certain situations”.
The vehicle could recognise an emergency scene. The vehicle could not recognise smoke. These are set out as two separate capabilities because they were two separate capabilities. The second was added afterwards, by a company that had until that morning no particular reason to think the first implied it.
The recall is numbered 26E044000. It covers 105 vehicles, which is the deployed fleet in its entirety. It was decided on 7 July 2026 and entered the public record ten days later. It is delivered over the air: the vehicles download it themselves. No vehicle was required to attend a service centre, and none did.
It is not the company’s first. Zoox recalled 258 vehicles in March 2025 over unexpected hard braking. It recalled twice more that May. One followed a collision with a passenger car, the other a separate matter involving an electric scooter.
Invited to comment, Zoox said: “Safety is foundational at Zoox. We value our work with first responders, city officials, and regulators to continue to ensure we’re driving safely in the communities we serve.”
The Bureau records what the work with first responders consisted of on this occasion. The first responders stood in a road. They waited for a remote operator in another building to reverse a car out of their fire.
